Tile Video
The Edina Art Center produced a video of an
historic home on a Minneapolis lake that has at least 2,000 wonderful
examples of Art and Craft period tiles. The video was completed for
the September conference of the Tile Heritage Foundation, "Tiles in the
Twin Cities: the Quintessence of Handicraft." Many of the tiles featured
in the video were created by early 20th Century artists Batchelder and
Mercer.
Videos can be rented or purchased at the Art Center (where members can receive a discount), or you can
Order Online.

The dining room and third-floor den
of the home appear to feature all Mercer tiles, with the exception of
one in the den. One of the
13 musicians on the fireplace is identical to one featured in
1,000 Years of Architectural Tile. Border pieces on the fireplace are also shown
in the book. The brocade border in the den is the same as one shown
from Mercer's own home. |

The garage
doors are surrounded by more than 200 Batchelder tiles of a two-inch
continuing vine pattern with grapes and small animals. The four
bottom pieces are missing, but spares found in the attic show they
included cupids like the ones in the Batchelder catalog. |
 |
Outside, there are tiles on the chimney and a window box by the entry. The
window boxes features musician corbels. |
 |
There is one Batchelder tile inset in the otherwise Mercer den on the home's third floor. |
