Local Traffic Task Force

The Edina City Council in May 2003 accepted a preliminary Findings and
Recommendations Report from the Edina Local Traffic Task Force.
The Local Traffic Task Force was created by
the Council to provide criteria for analyzing traffic on Edina’s roadways
and to institute a “toolbox” to creatively mitigate traffic issues such as
speed and volume. During the eight months that the Task Force met, members
studied the local traffic system, identified issues, studied specific
areas and prepared findings and recommendations.
Among the group’s findings were:
- The operation of the regional highway
system plays an integral role in all local traffic issues.
- The functional classification of Edina
streets plays an essential role in managing local traffic, providing
streets that are intended to move traffic within and through Edina.
- Understanding issues and finding
solutions requires a view beyond Edina.
- Solving local traffic issues must
involve an educational component.
The Task Force identified six traffic
“issue areas.” Those areas include northeast Edina, northwest Edina, the
area around Edina High School and Valley View Middle School, the area
around the Edina Community Center, West 70th Street and France Avenue.
The Task Force has been disbanded. However, as recommended by the Task
Force, the Edina City Council in December 2003 established the
Transportation Commission to address transportation issues and improve the
local transportation system to stay consistent with the Comprehensive Plan
and Vision 20/20.
